The 24 Heure du Mans 2008 was one incredible race. After 24 hours of continuous racing, there was still only one lap between the leading Audi no. 2 driven by Kristensen, McNish and Capello and the challenging Peugeot no. 7 driven by Villeneuve, Sarazin and Minassian.
This is amazing. From a raw power, strictly technical point of view, the Peugeot 908 was about 3 second faster pe lap. At more than 300 laps driven, this should have given them an advantage of 900 seconds or 15 minutes. At roughly 3 minutes and 30 seconds a lap, that means that an advantage of about four laps. In other words, if the Paugeot and the Audi would have been mechanically equal, Audi could have joined the race during the 5th lap and still win. How great is that? Kristensen, McNish Capello and the Audi engineering and mechanical crew made this possible. The reliability of the Audi R10 is improving at incredible pace.
Peugeot put up a great fight, but the experience that comes with drivers like Kristensen, Capello and McNish, the incredible reliability of the R10 and the impressive efficiency of Audi's technical crew made the difference.
